Resetting the SMC of your MacBook

In order to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) can resolve certain problems about power, batteries, fans and any other features.

This article only applies to Mac computers that have an Intel processor.

Let’s try to reset the SMC on computers with T2 chip

Notebook computers with the T2 chip

Before resetting the SMC, check the following tips:

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Push and hold the power button for 10 seconds, so release the button.
  3. Wait a minute, then press the power button to start your Mac.

If the problem continues, fits better to check these steps to reset the SMC:

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. On your built-in keyboard, push and keep all of the following keys. Your Mac might turn on.
    • Control https://support.apple.com/library/content/dam/edam/applecare/images/en_US/macos/Catalina/macos-catalina-sidecar-sidebar-control-icon.png on the left side of your keyboard
    • Option (Alt) https://support.apple.com/library/content/dam/edam/applecare/images/en_US/macos/Catalina/macos-catalina-sidecar-sidebar-option-icon.png on the left side of your keyboard
    • Shift https://support.apple.com/library/content/dam/edam/applecare/images/en_US/macos/Catalina/macos-catalina-sidecar-sidebar-shift-icon.png on the right side of your keyboard
  3. Keep holding all three keys for around 7 seconds, after that push and hold the power button too. If your Mac is on, it will turn off as you hold the keys.
  4. Continue holding all four keys for another 7 seconds, then release them.
  5. Wait a few seconds, then press the power button to turn on your Mac.

Desktop computers with the T2 chip

  1. Turn off your Mac, then unplug the power cable.
  2. Wait 15 seconds, then plug the power cable back in.
  3. Wait 5 seconds, then push the power button start on your Mac.

Reset the SMC on other computers

If your Mac doesn’t have the Apple T2 Security Chip, follow mentioned ways. If you need any help, contact Apple Support

Notebook computers with a non-removable battery

This applies to MacBook Pro models presented in mid-2009 to 2017, MacBook Air models presented in 2017 or earlier, and all MacBook models, except the MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2009).

  1. Turn off your Mac.
  2. On your built-in keyboard, press and keep all of these keys:
    • Shift https://support.apple.com/library/content/dam/edam/applecare/images/en_US/macos/Catalina/macos-catalina-sidecar-sidebar-shift-icon.png on the left side of your keyboard
    • Control https://support.apple.com/library/content/dam/edam/applecare/images/en_US/macos/Catalina/macos-catalina-sidecar-sidebar-control-icon.png on the left side of your keyboard
    • Option (Alt) https://support.apple.com/library/content/dam/edam/applecare/images/en_US/macos/Catalina/macos-catalina-sidecar-sidebar-option-icon.png on the left side of your keyboard
  3. While holding all three keys, press and hold the power button too.
  4. Keep holding all four keys for 10 seconds.
  5. Release all keys, then push the power button to turn on your Mac.

Notebook computers with a battery that can be removed

This applies to all MacBook Pro and MacBook models presented in early 2009 or earlier, as well as the MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2009). 

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Remove the battery. (If you need help removing it, contact an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.)
  3. Push and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
  4. Reinstall the battery.
  5. Push the power button to turn on your Mac.

Desktop computers

  1. Turn off your Mac, after that unplug the power cable.
  2. Wait 15 seconds, then plug the power cable back in.
  3. Wait 5 seconds, then push the power button to start your Mac.

All about the SMC

Actually the System Management Controller is responsible for controlling behaviors that is related to these bellow features:

  • Power, like the power button and power to the USB ports
  • Battery and charging
  • Fans and other thermal-management features
  • Indicators or sensors like status indicator lights (sleep status, battery charging status and others), the sudden motion sensor, the ambient light sensor and keyboard back-lighting
  • Behavior when opening and closing the lid of a notebook computer

Resetting the SMC never affect the contents of NVRAM or PRAM.
